This summer, students aged 8 - 12 have the opportunity to reimagine Downtown Sioux Falls in the digital world of Minecraft and the physical world of Lego. Working alongside Jordan Deffenbaugh, member of the 4D Design team and professional Mad Scientist, participants will create their own ‘design firms,’ work with both Lego bricks and Minecraft to draft, reimagine, and redesign Sioux Falls for the future in both function and form. A host of expert guests will join us for a swath of activities over the course of this five-day fun and dynamic experience. The class will culminate in a showing of the project to representatives of the Sioux Falls community – and with plenty of new skills, memories, and friends to take home ‘til the future of the city and beyond.

Students will trek through the city they know, but unlike ever before! These aren’t just guided tours. This portion of the program emphasizes re-seeing and rediscovering the familiar – from the Lego brick to the laundromat – and reimagining the possibilities of the known by redesigning Downtown Sioux Falls. This workshop asks, first and foremost: “How do we build Sioux Falls ready for the future?” At 4D, we believe it starts by knowing, appreciating, and understanding exactly where the city itself has come from and how it’s gotten here, to today.
Real time spent in a constructive, studio-style environment gives students the chance not only to play as they draft, collaborate, and test out their ideas, but they’ll be learning real-world techniques and be challenged to incorporate core-concept principles of design. Our instructor will not only guide them, but provide feedback, alongside support from industry professionals brought in specially for the workshop. If you can think it, you can make it out of bricks. The rest is just fun!
Design it. Do it. That’s our motto – and by using the materials (both virtual and visceral that they know and love), we will bring imagination to life! Students will find themselves on a fast-track to understanding design and construction in a totally novel way. There’s no better way to learn than with your hands. Let’s put some bricks in ‘em and see what your kids can do!
Students will have the opportunity to present their models and the key concepts upon which they’ve been built to parents, friends, and Sioux Falls community members. The opportunity to learn is treasured – but the ability to teach? That’s priceless. We encourage our students to teach what they have learned!
